hey everyone it's Renee with new ways
nutrition today we're gonna talk about
three simple and balanced meals for you
to feed your six-month-old first source
of iron for your baby
it's a really good source of protein so
they're one of the key foods when you're
serving solid foods to start with to
make sure you clean up their iron stores
and then we have a banana here just
chill and we're gonna mush that into
and this good thing about bananas is
that no they're pretty sweet but you
don't have to use any actual sweetener
something that we generally are going to
try and avoid
so we're dumping the eggs in mixing it a
little bit getting all the lumps out the
next thing we're gonna add is a
tablespoon of flax seed which I have
right here this is ground great source
of won't be fats for your baby you
haven't heard
that's are a great way for your baby to
help develop their brain so we never
want to be using anything low-fat with
our babies good we want 1/2 a teaspoon
of vanilla
so we're gonna do a dash of cinnamon
don't need to measure this not about
cinnamon is also a good way to introduce
flavor to your baby so them in of any
other spice really tend to focus on
bland things but for babies they've been
exposed to it in your womb so all right
so that looks good we're gonna pop that
in the microwave for three minutes going
to come out looking like this now this
might look not so amazing I promise it
tastes delicious stands a great source
of everything that I talked about the
fiber fat protein and iron so when we're
serving things for our babies we want it
to be finger width one to two fingers
and say that's about two right there and
then the length that you want to give
your six-month-old is about the length
of their fist and a half so when you're
looking at it like here you want them to
be able to grab it and then chew a
little bit on it so Japan Oh bigger baby
is that the general good way to do it
this one's gonna be a little too long
but depending on the developmental age
of your baby maybe it's okay maybe you
want to cut it in half cut it in the
third but the general guideline you're
gonna have one-and-a-half links of fist
yeah this underplate meat you're serving
your baby again we do not want to
overwhelm them so don't put everything
on there your best bet is to start with
one of each and then they want more
together more so the next thing we're
gonna do is an orange bottom then I like
to score mine
gently about an inch apart this orange
is a great source of vitamin C for your
baby and we talked about earlier with
the egg being a great source of iron
vitamin C helps to iron be absorbed so
you're gonna have a good source of iron
your best bet is to try and find a fruit
or vegetable it's got a good source of
vitamin here the thing about oranges
with babies is you don't want to give
them a full wedge just like we would eat
it if we were peeling it for ourselves
bring it up a little bit so they can get
access to the juice in the middle sports
all the grass so you don't want to give
them something like this this can be
very hard for them to get into so you
can break it like that you can purposely
try and cut pieces when you have we have
fresh oranges from our tree and they
generally don't peel apart normally so
you can give your baby part with a side
you can kill anything off really it
doesn't matter I just try and make it a
little bit easier for them to get at it
you can score with your finger like that
that's so to the side again one piece is
fine to start with don't overwhelm them
and the last thing that we're gonna do
is Greek yogurt and we're gonna add a
little bit of cheetah seed to it so this
Greek yogurt and just spooned out a
couple of tablespoons again full fat no
low-fat for baby and this right here is
just a little bit of chia seed so I just
like to mix it in it gives a little bit
of texture just sprinkle a little bit
stir it in it's also a little
nutritional powerhouse healthy fats
fiber all that good stuff so you have it
like this keep your spoon it doesn't
matter but for this your baby is
obviously not going to be very easy so I
can have a good job of grasping it at 6
months so we preload our spoons the best
way to do it when we say preload that's
plenty they're gonna get it all over
their face that's okay I'm gonna get it
hopefully everywhere so let them explore
with this I like to have a couple of
spoons at a time my baby and I'll give
her one while I load the other and let
her kind of just go for it and then give
her another one
she's done or bored with that one and
throw that on the
so again start with just one spoon give
them a little bit see how they do they
might not get anything in but that's
okay you just want them to explore there
we go
so that is plenty for your baby to start
with I think we have all this after the
extra over here so you can give them
more if they want more but start with
the little things there you go so that
is a very all right our second meal
today is gonna be crock pot oats cottage
cheese and berries so the first thing
we're gonna do is get our crock pot
going because we want to get our oats
cooking they take about four hours at a
minimum so this recipe is pretty simple
it's just one cup of oats to two cups of
both water and milk first this and
usually I like to do this either on the
weekend or the day before it takes four
hours at low or eight hours at sorry it
takes four hours at high or eight hours
at low so I like to get it going and set
it alright so the next part of our meal
is a scrambled egg and what we have here
is I have previously scrambled this egg
so that I can show you if you're
interested in learning how to do this
just head to the video we've got it
linked below so this is a type of egg
that is literally an egg
I call it scrambled because you've whip
it up in the in the bowl ahead of time
but you don't scramble it in the actual
pan you cook it omelet style and that's
so that it's a little bit easier for
your baby to hold it so I am just
cutting this into finger
width pieces now you have a couple of
options this egg is the size of my small
pan so this one is pretty easy to hold
it's a little floppy but they'll
probably be okay and then this one you
can cut ends off
take a bite yourself it's up to you it's
really just gonna be based on what your
baby is telling you but something
similar to this should work so we'll go
ahead and put this over here there you
go and then we have our strawberries so
these strawberries are just frozen and
then defrosted in the fridge so you can
see the texture of this it's really
mushy and that's what we want for a
starter eater you want to be able to
mush it you really want them to mush it
before they get it to their mouth they
usually you're just gonna grab it in
their palm so that's good so we'll go
ahead and set that there make sure all
the ones that you have are pretty mushy
if they're not mushy enough just go
ahead and kind of start them out
yourself so we'll give her two there and
again we're like always being really
careful not to overwhelm your baby you
want them to have just a small portion
so that they can know and try all their
food all right so with that being said
we are gonna pull in I have some oats
here that I cooked and put into the
fridge just so you can see so these oats
right here this is exactly what we did
in the crock pot and this is what they
come out I wanted you to see what they
look like cold so they're really
gelatinous they don't exactly look very
appetizing but you can keep them at the
beginning of the week and then just dish
them up for yourself and your baby as
you go through the week so this I just
heated this up for two minutes in the
microwave with a little bit of milk
probably one to two tablespoons for this
amount and it already looks better I
mean it's something that you can give
your baby at this texture and it's not
too hot so for oatmeal I like to preload
it just like that and set it on if you
feel confident in your baby or you're
really willing to clean up this morning
then go ahead and just lump it on the
tray right there and it'll
fine and your baby will just grab it
with their hand and drag it in the mouth
so there we go there is our healthy and
balanced meal all right our last meal of
the day is gonna be just toast with some
peanut butter and then we're going to do
some cottage cheese and we're gonna do a
banana so we're gonna toast our bread
first
and while that's toasting we'll do our
banana so banana is great for them to
practice the dexterity of their hands
get it open there's different people
that will say different ways to cut it
for a baby and I've tried it several
with my six-month-old and this is the
best just taking the skin all the way
off at least for her and then I try and
cut it in half lengthwise and this makes
it a little bit easier for her to get so
just like that on her plate and then we
also have our cottage cheese and I've
just spooned out a little bit right here
so cottage cheese is a great source of
protein and calories I like to add a
little bit of seasoning to it today
we're doing nutmeg and cinnamon and the
reason that is is because I like to give
kind of cheese a couple times a week I
don't want it to always taste the same I
want her to experience some different
flavors so we're just gonna mix this up
a little bit and again like every other
thing that I've been saying about
spooning we're just gonna preload the
spoon we're not gonna feed it to her so
you mix it up and then preload not much
just that amount and you put it on the
on the plate for her or him and there
you go and you save the rest for when
they're done with their spoon and then
our toast when the toast is done it's a
little bit easier when you toast bread
for them otherwise I can get to gummy so
this is a sprouted wheat bread just as a
little bit easier to
digest when it's sprouted and there's no
salt in it another thing that we're
watching with babies so I've got a
creamy peanut butter here peanut butter
is of course an allergen they used to
say that you should avoid introducing it
until your baby was much older and the
instructions have now changed and it's
early and often is the guidance for any
allergen especially peanuts so I like to
give my baby peanuts frequently several
times a week just to make sure that she
gets used to it so again it like we've
been talking about we want to cut this
into finger width sizes you're always
gonna have different lengths of things
so it's never gonna be perfect this is
probably two times the length of baby's
fist at six months that's okay
it'll fall off same thing with the
banana it is what it is
and then I just saved these for when she
throws the other one on the floor if she
seems like she wants more so this is our
meal probably our quickest one yet just
like that all right
